Dual relationship
A situation in which therapist and client are also connected in some other way — through business, friendship or family.
Why it’s a problem
Because the power in the relationship isn’t equal, and because the other connection affects judgement. That is why a therapist doesn’t work with friends, relatives or colleagues, and doesn’t enter into relationships with clients outside the room.
What this means for you
If we meet outside, I won’t greet you first — not out of rudeness, but because I’m protecting your privacy. You, of course, may.
