Adolescence

The period in which a child tests out who they are — often by moving away from you.

How it shows up

A closed door, one-word answers, friends before family. For a parent that is a loss; for a teenager it is a developmental task. The withdrawal isn’t a sign that you’ve lost them.

What we do with it in therapy

We work on how to stay reachable without imposing — fewer questions, more availability. And on what stops working in parenting exactly when it used to be effective.
