A child's anger

A normal part of development that needs a boundary for the behaviour and acceptance for the feeling.

How it shows up

A child doesn’t yet have developed brakes for strong emotions — those mature well into adolescence. So »calm down« isn’t a request they can carry out; a child settles beside an adult who is calm.

What we do with it in therapy

We separate behaviour from feeling: hitting isn’t allowed, anger is. That distinction is the most useful parenting tool I know.
