A hand on the chest
You place a palm on your chest or belly and stay for a few minutes with the warmth and the breath.
A hand on the chest is the shortest exercise in this collection. You place one palm in the middle of your chest, the other on your belly, and for a few breaths simply feel the weight and warmth of your hands. If it feels right, you can add a sentence — »this will pass too« or »this is hard right now« — but it is not required. Some people find touch on the chest uncomfortable; a palm on the shoulder, or both hands around the opposite elbows, works just as well. The exercise is not there to remove the distress, but so that you do not have to be alone in it.
When to use it
In sudden distress, at night, after a difficult conversation. The simplest form of self-soothing and one of the few you can do anywhere without anyone noticing.
How it goes
- Place one palm on your chest, the other, if you like, on your belly.
- Notice the warmth and the pressure of your hand.
- Let the breath settle by itself under your palm.
- If it feels right, say quietly to yourself: this is hard, and I am here.
Why it works
Warm, safe touch is one of the fastest signals of safety the body knows — and it works even when the touch is your own.
