Consistency

Predictability of responses, which tells a child what they can expect.

Term

How it shows up

It isn’t strictness. It is that the same rule applies on Monday and on Friday, when you’re rested and when you’re not. Children don’t test boundaries because they’re naughty, but because they’re checking whether the boundaries hold.

What we do with it in therapy

We set fewer rules and make sure the ones that remain really apply. Three consistent agreements are worth more than ten occasional ones.

Does some of this sound familiar?

An explanation is one thing, the experience another. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, write to me.

This is what insomnia taught me. What has it taught you? Traumatic experiences can leave you weakened — on recovery and strength. On the worries that drain our energy. On why differentiation matters in relationships. Self-confidence starts with self-awareness. On how hard it is to start — and harder still to keep going.
