Schema therapy
An approach working with deep patterns formed in childhood, and with the ways we defend against them.
What it means
Schemas are stubborn beliefs, such as abandonment or defectiveness, that formed because basic needs weren’t met. The therapy works with them and with the »modes« that switch on in adulthood.
How it differs
It combines behavioural techniques with work on early experience. Useful with entrenched patterns where shorter approaches haven’t sufficed.
