Avoidance

Retreating from what triggers distress — the fastest relief and the most reliable way of making sure the distress stays.

Term

How it shows up

You don’t answer the message, you cancel the gathering, you put off the check-up. Each time it’s easier. And each time, the space you move in narrows a little.

What we do with it in therapy

We take avoidance apart gradually, in steps you set yourself. The aim isn’t heroism but evidence — the body has to experience that you got through it.

Does some of this sound familiar?

An explanation is one thing, the experience another. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, write to me.

This is what insomnia taught me. What has it taught you? Traumatic experiences can leave you weakened — on recovery and strength. On the worries that drain our energy. On why differentiation matters in relationships. Self-confidence starts with self-awareness. On how hard it is to start — and harder still to keep going.
