Rumination

The repeated turning over of the same thoughts, which looks like problem-solving but never reaches a solution.

How it shows up in daily life

You replay the same scene again and again: what you should have said, why you said it that way, what the other person thought. It feels like solving something, because it is effortful and because you’re occupied with the problem. Two hours later you’re no closer to an answer, but you are more depleted.

What we do with it in therapy

We separate thinking from chewing over. Thinking ends in a decision; chewing over ends in exhaustion. Once you feel that difference in the body you have a measure — and with it the possibility of breaking the loop sooner.
