Belonging

The sense that you fit somewhere as you are — one of the basic human needs.

Term

How it shows up

It isn’t the same as company. You can be among people and not belong. Belonging requires being seen, not only accepted — being accepted as an adapted version of yourself doesn’t create belonging.

What we do with it in therapy

It often turns out you’ve been paying for belonging with adaptation. The work goes towards testing whether the relationship holds you too.

Does some of this sound familiar?

An explanation is one thing, the experience another. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, write to me.

This is what insomnia taught me. What has it taught you? Traumatic experiences can leave you weakened — on recovery and strength. On the worries that drain our energy. On why differentiation matters in relationships. Self-confidence starts with self-awareness. On how hard it is to start — and harder still to keep going.
