Phases of therapy

The sequence the process usually follows: establishing safety, working through, integrating and ending.

How it goes

The first phase is for the relationship and for stability. The second is the most demanding, because what brought you here opens up. The third connects insights to daily life; the fourth brings things to a close.

Why it helps to know

Because in the second phase many people think therapy isn’t working — they feel worse. That is expected and, as a rule, temporary.
