Executive functions

The group of capacities that make planning, starting, switching and inhibiting possible.

Term

How it shows up

When they weaken — with stress, insomnia, ADHD or burnout — a person knows what they should do and still doesn’t start. That isn’t a lack of character; it is a weakened function.

What we do with it in therapy

We work with external supports: breaking things into small steps, time frames, and removing the obstacles to the first step. Often the question »what is the first minute« matters more than the plan.

Does some of this sound familiar?

An explanation is one thing, the experience another. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, write to me.

This is what insomnia taught me. What has it taught you? Traumatic experiences can leave you weakened — on recovery and strength. On the worries that drain our energy. On why differentiation matters in relationships. Self-confidence starts with self-awareness. On how hard it is to start — and harder still to keep going.
