Five minutes with no purpose
You sit and do nothing for five minutes — no phone, no music, no goal.
Five minutes with no purpose means exactly that: you sit down, put the phone away and do nothing for five minutes. No music, no podcast, no looking out of the window with a task. Set a timer so you do not have to watch the clock. Almost certainly an urge to check something will appear — notice it and stay. Many people last a minute and a half the first time. This is not a test of discipline; it is a measurement of how much discomfort sits underneath your constant activity.
When to use it
As an experiment, not as relaxation. Many people find that five minutes without content is barely bearable — and that is an interesting piece of information.
How it goes
- Set a timer for five minutes and put your phone out of reach.
- Sit. Don’t meditate, don’t plan, don’t solve.
- Watch what turns up — restlessness, boredom, a thought you’ve been avoiding.
- When the time is up, write one sentence about what appeared.
Why it works
Constantly filling your attention is the most widespread form of avoidance. This exercise stops it for five minutes.
