Idealisation
An exaggerated, one-sided view of someone as perfect — often the prelude to an equally one-sided disappointment.
How it shows up
A new partner, a new boss, a new therapist: at first, flawless. When the first flaw appears, the whole picture falls. Swinging between the heights and the depths is more exhausting than the realistic middle.
What we do with it in therapy
The work isn’t towards less enthusiasm, but towards the capacity to see a person whole — with the good and the bad at once.
