Decision fatigue

A decline in the quality of decisions after a long run of choices.

Term

How it shows up

In the evening it is harder to say no, harder to stick to a plan, easier to give in. The phenomenon is contested in the research as to its explanation, but in practice most people recognise it.

What this means

Move important decisions to the morning and automate small ones with routine. Routine isn’t dullness; it is saving your decision-making for what counts.

Does some of this sound familiar?

An explanation is one thing, the experience another. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, write to me.

This is what insomnia taught me. What has it taught you? Traumatic experiences can leave you weakened — on recovery and strength. On the worries that drain our energy. On why differentiation matters in relationships. Self-confidence starts with self-awareness. On how hard it is to start — and harder still to keep going.
