Emotional literacy

The ability to recognise, name and express feelings — your own and other people's.

Term

How it shows up

Someone who grew up where feelings weren’t talked about has three words available: fine, bad, angry. A narrower vocabulary means poorer regulation, because you can’t regulate what you can’t name.

What we do with it in therapy

We widen the vocabulary as we go, while describing concrete situations. With children it is one of the most useful parenting tools there is.

Does some of this sound familiar?

An explanation is one thing, the experience another. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, write to me.

This is what insomnia taught me. What has it taught you? Traumatic experiences can leave you weakened — on recovery and strength. On the worries that drain our energy. On why differentiation matters in relationships. Self-confidence starts with self-awareness. On how hard it is to start — and harder still to keep going.
