Parental burnout
Exhaustion, emotional disconnection from your child and the feeling that you're not a good parent — a state the field recognised relatively recently.
How it shows up
It isn’t tiredness. It is emptiness in your child’s presence, irritability that surprises you, and the shame that follows. It is that shame, above all, that reliably prevents people from seeking help.
What we do with it in therapy
First, relief from the shame, because without that there is no conversation. Then we look at where the gap lies between expectations and circumstances — and what can really be changed.
