Becoming independent
The process in which a young adult becomes autonomous without having to cut contact.
How it shows up
Two unsuccessful outcomes: leaving with a bang, and staying without a life of your own. Successful independence lies in between — your own decisions and a preserved relationship.
What we do with it in therapy
The work happens on both sides: the young person learns to bear disagreement, the parents to loosen control without experiencing it as a loss.
