Dropping out of therapy

A sudden ending without agreement — often exactly when something difficult is approaching.

How it shows up

A cancellation followed by silence. The feeling that there’s no point any more. Sometimes the reason is entirely practical; often the drop-out is the strongest form of resistance.

What we do with it in therapy

If you’re thinking of stopping, I ask you to come and say so. That conversation is often the most useful session in the whole process — and if you then decide to leave, that is fine.
