Social anxiety

Fear of being judged by others, so strong that it begins to shrink your life.

Term

How it shows up

It isn’t shyness. It is composing sentences in advance, a blush more troubling than the situation itself, and hours of going over it afterwards. Avoidance brings immediate relief and long-term worsening.

What we do with it in therapy

We work in gradual steps towards what you avoid, and on the belief that others watch you as closely as you watch yourself. As a rule, they don’t.

Does some of this sound familiar?

An explanation is one thing, the experience another. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, write to me.

This is what insomnia taught me. What has it taught you? Traumatic experiences can leave you weakened — on recovery and strength. On the worries that drain our energy. On why differentiation matters in relationships. Self-confidence starts with self-awareness. On how hard it is to start — and harder still to keep going.
