Parenting styles
Ways of parenting that differ in how much warmth and how much demand they contain.
How it shows up
The authoritative style combines warmth with clear boundaries; the permissive has warmth without boundaries; the authoritarian, boundaries without warmth; the uninvolved, neither. Research consistently shows the best outcomes with the first.
What we do with it in therapy
Most parents swing between styles depending on their own tiredness. We work on consistency, which isn’t strictness, and on the warm boundary, which for many is a new combination.
